Does Delta 8 Contain THC?

If you've been looking into Delta 8 products, you probably have seen a few different names for it: Delta 8, Delta-8, Δ8, D8, Delta-8-THC, Δ8-THC, D8-THC, etc. These are all referring to the same cannabinoid: Delta-8-THC.

Delta 8 is in fact THC; all of the previous listed names are shortened for Delta-8 Tetrahydrocannabinol or Delta-8-THC. Delta 8 is an isomer of Delta-9-THC, the compound commonly known as THC. While Delta 8 and Delta 9 are both forms of THC, Delta 9 is more traditionally known as THC or cannabis. Delta 8 is derived from hemp, whereas Delta 9 is derived from cannabis. In this article, we will refer to Delta-9-THC as cannabis.

What is so great about Delta 8?

Delta 8 is a novel cannabinoid that is rapidly gaining popularity because it is legal and has similar psychological and physiological effects to cannabis. These effects include euphoria, tranquility, relaxation, and other therapeutic properties. Delta 8 is less potent than cannabis and its effects are commonly reported as being similar but more mild. In fact, Delta 8 is becoming more preferred among many who claim it doesn’t bring on the negative effects of cannabis such as anxiety and paranoia.

Furthermore, Delta 8 has been studied as a potential treatment for glaucoma, corneal injury, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. While no major clinical studies have been published on Delta-8-THC so far, it is currently being used in treatment as a component of medical cannabis.

How is Delta 8 Legal?

The 2018 United States Farm Bill made all derivatives of hemp legal. This applies to Delta 8 because it’s manufactured from hemp. Hemp can be legally grown and used for extractions all over the United States. Although Delta-8-THC is a legal alternative to traditional cannabis use, it is quickly gaining mainstream recognition and becoming the fastest growing segment of products derived from hemp.

While Delta-8-THC is federally legal, it still remains illegal in a few states that specifically exclude Delta-8-THC and other hemp derived cannabinoids. We have composed a list of states where it is legal here.
