If you've been looking into Delta 8 products, you’ve probably seen a few different names for it:

  • Delta 8
  • Delta-8
  • Δ8
  • D8
  • Delta-8-THC
  • Δ8-THC
  • D8-THC

These are all referring to the same cannabinoid: Delta-8-THC.

Delta 8 is in fact THC. All the previously listed names are shortened for Delta-8 Tetrahydrocannabinol, or Delta-8-THC.

Delta 8 is an isomer of Delta-9-THC, the compound commonly known as THC. While Delta 8 and Delta 9 are both forms of THC, Delta 9 is more traditionally known as THC or cannabis. Delta 8 is derived from hemp, whereas Delta 9 is derived from cannabis.

In this article, we’ll refer to Delta-9-THC as cannabis.

What is so great about Delta 8?

Delta 8 is a novel cannabinoid gaining popularity because it’s legal and has similar psychological and physiological effects to cannabis. These effects include good-feelings, tranquility, relaxation, and other therapeutic properties.

Delta 8 is less potent than cannabis and its effects are commonly reported as being similar but more mild. In fact, Delta 8 is becoming more preferred among those who claim it doesn’t bring the negative effects of cannabis (such as anxiety and paranoia).

While no major clinical studies have been published on Delta-8-THC so far, it’s currently being used in treatment as a component of medical cannabis.

How is Delta 8 Legal?

The 2018 United States Farm Bill made all derivatives of hemp legal. This applies to Delta 8 because it’s manufactured from hemp. Hemp can be legally grown and used for extractions all over the United States.

Although Delta-8-THC is a legal alternative to traditional cannabis use, it’s quickly gaining mainstream recognition. It has become the fastest growing segment of products derived from hemp.

While Delta-8-THC is federally legal, it still remains illegal in a few states that specifically exclude it and other hemp derived cannabinoids. We’ve compiled a list of states where Delta-8-THC is legal.
